Vendor Selection, Pilot, and Exit
Define the seat before the vendor
Use this play when the company needs a capability it cannot responsibly cover in-house. Define the seat before comparing vendors: the decisions it owns, work it performs, inputs it needs, artifacts it returns, handoffs it maintains, and evidence that proves value.
Do not hire from a generic service list, promised channel metric, or impressive portfolio alone. A good specialist can still be a poor fit for your services, market, budget, capacity, or team.
Outsourcing does not transfer accountability
Remodeler marketing vendors often influence high-value accounts, leads, media, and claims. The company needs an internal approver even when the vendor is the expert operator. Project fit and qualified pipeline matter more than raw lead volume.
Size the pilot to the risk
Minimum: Use a written brief, confirm relevant work, compare scope and unknowns, and preserve company ownership of accounts and source assets.
Growing team: Run a bounded pilot with baseline, deliverables, meeting rhythm, acceptance criteria, qualified-outcome evidence, and an explicit continue/repair/stop date.
Advanced: Evaluate cross-function handoffs, documentation quality, data portability, learning returned to the company, and the cost of dependency in addition to production output.
Use the Vendor Pilot and Exit Scorecard to compare candidates and govern the engagement.
Name the internal owner
Marketing Operations owns access, agreements, artifacts, continuity, and exit. Leadership approves the business case and spend. The relevant function owns strategy and craft judgment. Measurement defines evidence. Every vendor has one internal accountable owner.
Renew, repair, or exit
Judge the pilot against agreed outcomes, reliability, communication, handoffs, ownership, and learning. Vendor-controlled access or billing, unreconciled results, hidden methods, expanding obligations, or an exit that would strand the company are reasons to repair or end the relationship.
Record the adopted vendor play, seat, pilot window, decision owner, evidence link, and review date in the Strategy Menu. Keep commercial terms and private evaluations in the client system.
